Suuns Interview (interviewed by White Wabbit Records, interpreted by Simon)
Something about yourself
Please introduce a little bit about yourself. I am Joseph Yarmush and I play guitar and bass in the band, Suuns. We are from Montreal, Canada
Things must do everyday? ( you'll feel weird if not doing) Exercise a little, drink coffee and play guitar.
Why you obsess with the zero number? It was our old band name. We are less obsessed but more so we feel a connection to our younger selves when we started the band. I think now, we are over it though.
You possibly enjoy all the experience in band tour among countries. What is the most impressive concert to you? We have a few. But the first time we toured Europe was impressive. Playing sold out shows to countries we've never been to. Also when we play in Mew stork it's great. We like small concerts with the crowd really coming on the same level as us.
In last December, you had been invited to curate Sonic City Festival in Belgium. What did you think about that? Was there any interesting thing happened? This was a once in a lifetime experience. We were honored to be asked. It was two days and nights of bands we picked and everyone was so good. Swans ended the festival with a two hour set that absolutely exhausted me. It was great! Dream come true.
What are you currently addicted to? movies/ songs/ books Kendrick Lamar's new record is so good. And Solange Knowles. Of course, tv show Game of Thrones is so addictive.
Tell us something you'd never told to interviewer before. I don't like eating mushrooms.
Something about music Music fans in Taiwan obsess with your music and have a strong feeling of a dark, mysterious or even sexy image. How would you describe the music and the ideas you convey behind it? We try to make interesting, minimal music that comes from a rock background. It ends up being very dark. We like that and generally all want to explore this more.
Your latest album “Images Du Futur,” comparing to “Zeroes QC,” is more precise and mature, but less aggressive guitar. Audience always compares with every band’s albums. Had you ever worry that they would not like the new release? Yes a little. But only because we knew people would hear this album. The old album we didn't think too many people would hear it. But once the album starts to come together in the studio, we weren't worried. We were too focused on making the album. It's not productive to worry about such things. They effect the creativity negatively.
From the music video “Up Past The Nursery”, “Pie IX” to recently “Edie’s Dream” and “2020,” your visual design and arrangement are always impressive, and correspond to your music. But what I really like and try to ask you is “Red Song” (where Piccolo of Dragon Ball Z appears). Is that made by your works? We did that video. It's one take on a video camera and the song is edited so we could use slow motion to fit with the time of the song. It was a simple concept that works well for that song. We used an old video tape that had some dragon ball z on it. We taped over it!
Suuns seems to gain more popularity in Europe, is that correct? Or most of Canadian bands are just in that situation? Most Canadian bands are not in that situation. We are lucky to get to go to Europe and play great shows. The U.S. was a little slower to come on board but our last tour there was successful.
There are many great musicians and bands from Montreal. Do you plan to cooperate with Jerusalem In My Heart for the next step? Is that a musical co-work or live performance? We have recordings with Radwan from Jerusalem in my Heart. We have not had time to mix or decode what to do with them yet. But stay tuned...
If you only can pick a song, is there any song which influences your music or is the turning point of the life? Smells like Teen Spirit. Great band and changed people in my generation forever.
Maybe you have been asked many times for this question: do you have any idea of the next project? Jerusalem in My Heart and maybe a remix LP
Something About Taiwan
I still remember that we asked you about what is your imagination of Taiwan in 2011. Ben you told us like that there are mountains and mysterious waterfalls, and also an old man hanging lantern and standing on a cliff! Are the images still the same? Or have you done some investigation of Taiwan, and possibly had thoughts of where you want to go or the food you want to try? It's all about food. I know it's a great artistic culture that is unique, that's why White Wabbit puts our records out. Something interesting has to be going on. I picture modern city life and art and music mixed with old culture and beautiful landscapes. Can't wait.
Do you have friends who live in Taiwan? Or he or she being in Taiwan before? None of us have friends there nor have we been yet.
Will you prepare some specific surprises for music fans in Taiwan? It's always a surprise at Suuns shows. We may play some old songs from our unreleased ep. And we'll have two new songs.
At last, please say something to fans who will see your performance in Taiwan. We're happy to be coming to Taiwan. It's going to be amazing.
