Please introduce a little bit about yourself Victoria: I grew up in Denmark. I always played music, since I was a child. I used to sing in the church choir, and I studied classical music growing up. It wasn’t until I was 20 years old I started playing rock music.
Martin: Romantic and deep…yet oddly funny. I love ballet and classical music
Things must do everyday? ( you'll feel weird if not doing) Victoria: I have to juice. I make my own fresh in the morning with kale, celery, carrots and apples. I also do need to shower every day. I don’t feel right if I don’t.
Martin: Meditate, some form of exercise…yoga, jog or walk and be grateful for my life.
The coolest venue or city you have ever performed? Victoria: It’s hard to pick just one place. Italy has always been really good to us.
Martin: Portugal or Ireland. They were stand out moments that I can recall. There are many more amazing shows.
This question is for Victoria: I have read that you like acting as well, what kind of characters will you choose in a play? Victoria: I like playing a character that is neurotic. I am very drawn to comedies. At the moment I am doing a scene from “Lovers and other Strangers” by Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna. I play Wilma, who is married to Johnny. They have been together for many years, and she is afraid their marriage will get boring, so she has a notebook and keeps track of how often they have sex. It’s a very funny scene.
What are you currently addicted to? movies/ songs/ books Victoria: I just started watching the new season of Madmen. I love that show. For music, I have been listening a lot to Diamond Rings, Lana del Rey and Bat for Lashes.
Martin: El Perro Del Mar and her beautiful nose. I just love it. so strong !
Currently reading Pema Chodron. Movie - National Geographics…The Great White Shark
Tell us something you'd never told to interviewer before. Victoria: That will happen on question 7. J
Martin: I drive an old 84 Mercedes Benz 350TD wagon. The stereo is original and playing music from the 80's blows my mind driving on the freeway at night.
Something about music
How do you feel about your music being referred to as Shoegaze or Dream pop? What will you described your music? Victoria: It has always been hard for me to describe our music. Dream pop is probably a good description though.
Martin: Dream pop is fine. i like Art pop better. I think we go out of the box a bit more than Dream pop, but like I said. Its fine by me. We all need labels to keep our neurotic minds in order.
I do think that Gliss have a signature sound. Any special gear you are using that is becoming your trademark? Victoria: We have always used a lot of reverb, and I guess that’s why the music has a dreamy or ethereal vibe. Our signature sound is probably the vocals.
Martin: Chorus and reverb. I also really enjoyed using delay/reverb on my bass tracks. Limiting is another sound i like when mixing. It just squashes the sound so much that it expands horizontally.
Beside the album title, which element of your music you think is very ”Danish” ? Victoria: On our new album “Langsom Dans” we use a lot of electronic sounds, even electronic drums. To me that is very Danish. Danish music is also very often melancholic, and I think we have some of that as well.
Martin: The vocals no doubt. The moody intimate qualities as well. very personal.
"The Weight of Love" video is very astonishing. Tell us a little about the making of that video. Whose guitar? How is the idea of playing instruments under water come from? Victoria: We were introduced to the amazing director Paul Boyd, and he suggested we do a video together. The concept was all his, and he arranged to shoot it in a pool. The video was shot at the Scottish singer-songwriter, Angela McCluskey’s house. (Telepop Music etc - www.angelamccluskey.com)
Martin: I can't remember. It just happened. One day we were in water and i was really enjoying myself.
Did you ever observe your audiences? what did they look like ? Is there any common outfit or feature between them? Victoria: As far as the way they look, I don’t know if there is a common thread. But speaking with people after shows, I have had a lot of people tell me they have dealt with depression, and our music has helped them get through tough times. That is a very powerful thing to hear. I am very happy that our music has had a good influence on people.
Martin: They are usually very passionate and i like that very much.
We think "Langsom Dans" is quite different from your old sound, less noise-pop, more Trip-hop. What does it mean to you? a transformation? Victoria: Yes, that is correct, it is a departure from our old sound. As an artist you always want to expand and push yourself. It gets very boring if you keep making the same record over and over again. On this album, the writing process was completely different than what we have done before. Martin and I would write songs on our own, and then get together to demo them, and work out the arrangements. We would experiment with lots of different sounds, and different ways of playing the songs. It was a long process.
Martin: Yes, for sure ! We basically started from scratch in a way. We flipped it upside down and built something they way i would imagine painting would be. Very abstract and instinctive.
The lyrics are talking about Love: love of friends, love of lovers, love of life.
To you, what is the most beautiful part of love? and what is the most difficult part of it? Victoria: Sometimes the most beautiful part of love is also the most difficult. Martin and I used to be married, and while touring the previous album “Devotion Implosion” we split up. Our relationship had turned into a friendship, and it was very difficult to realize that. But we had to face the truth, and we also knew we wanted to continue writing music together. So “Langsom Dans” was written right after we broke up. It was very difficult spending that much time together on these very personal songs. But we did it. And we are now better friends than ever before.
Martin: I am addicted to love. I struggle with this. The most important thing I am learning is to love myself and that will transcend to others. Of course this is a major theme for me lyrically.
Its the foundation of life. Where would we be without love ?
Some Taiwan fans said that this album reminds them of Portishead、Lower Dens, even The Raveonettes, who or which band influence each of you most ? Victoria: I have always loved Portishead, as well as Massive Attack and Bjork. I love bands that are experimenting with sounds. It often happens to be electronic music, maybe combined with a bit of classical instruments. Of newer music, I really love The Knife, Fever Ray, Bat for Lashes and Diamond Rings. I love pop music. I listen to Lana del Rey, Madonna, and Kylie.
We are often compared to The Raveonettes. It might be because of the girl/boy harmonies. I take it as a compliment. I love Sune Rose Wagner. I have followed his career since we both lived in Denmark. He is an extremely talented song writer. I have a lot of respect for him. And after I got to know him personally, I also learned that he is the sweetest guy in the world. So that’s a good combination.
Martin:Lower Dens and Portishead ! I love art music. I love the abstract mixed with pop. Those two bands are my dream tours. I met Geoff at a show at the Troubadour for his side project BEAK! It was so amazing to see those drums fills in person that you hear on the Portishead albums. His style is his own. Lovely guy !
